The tile is a ceramic piece of little thickness, generally square in which one side is glazed as a result of baking a substance based on enamel that becomes impermeable and shiny. The tile is generally used for coating interior or exterior surfaces, such as kitchens, bathrooms, pools or as a decorative element. It is also applied on walls, floors and ceilings of palaces, gardens, religious buildings (churches, convents), and public or private buildings.

The tile is considered today as one of the most original productions of Portuguese culture, constituting one of the more popular and finest art that is made in Portugal. Although its origin is not Portuguese but Arabic (Al zulaic), the tile was an artistic expression in our country that had developed in its own kind: it’s told that in five centuries there was no country that produces tiles with such quality and quantity as Portugal. The mosaics depict the tradition and craftsmanship: the irregular aspect of each piece reveals that. No coating allows such a great diversity of colors and patterns, and in antiquity they already explored their potential by creating decorative paintings.
